Tip #19. Put Your Alarm Clock Far Enough From Your Bed

Added: 7/11/2007 12:39:14 AM

It’s simple advice yet many people don’t use it. They keep turning alarm off while being semi-asleep and then wonder how come they couldn’t wake up and missed an alarm... All you need is to put your alarm clock far enough to make you stand up and make few steps away from the bed to turn it off. I’ve used this approach successfully for few days until I found myself... walking back to the bed and falling asleep for one more hour! If this happens to you, here is what you should do. This tip works great in pair with another tip – GTD For Early Risers. I found that if I have something else to do after turning off alarm clock, I’m likely to go and do it, because the first and most challenging task – getting out of the bed – is already done. So I’ve built small morning ritual to follow, but it all starts with turning off alarm which is in the opposite corner of my bedroom.

Having alarm sound further away has additional benefit. You should avoid putting buzzing alarm clock right near your bed when you sleep because abrupt awakening is generally not a good thing for your health, and having alarm clock 10 feet away will make your awakening less stressful.

I have several alarm clocks, all far away from my bed, a few on the computer behind passwords I have to type in and I still go back to bed. Something tells me that it's not the alarm's fault though. haha

I had the same problem as Ryan (though never used clocks with passwords) I help over come this I would move the clock around, so I had to find it first.

I have a BIG problem of going back to bed after my alarm goes off, even when I make myself get up and walk to turn it off. But, I really like the idea of doing something else after turning off my alarm and starting a routine. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tips!

I had my alarm clock on my dresser across the room for the longest time, but I just got really good at walking across the room with my eyes closed to hit snooze!

I have always had this problem. I used to set 4 alarms at one point but nothing would stop me from going back to bed. Around 1 month ago I purchased a 'Philips Wakeup light'. It's a 'alarm' which wakes you up with light instead of sound. It really works I now can get up within 10 mins of waking up and I have not 'snoozed' it once!
