Tip #44. Start on Day One!

Added: 12/30/2007 10:16:46 PM

How often do you hear people saying things like "I’ll start eating only healthy food from next Monday", "I’ll start exercising on September 1st" etc. Did you note that many people want to change their life on some special day like first day of the week or month?

There is some magic in that Day One and for some reason we think that if we start something on that specific day we have somehow more chances to succeed. While some people may find rationale behind it, I personally think it’s a special procrastination trick which we use, often subconsciously. This is the reason we come up with to avoid doing something right now.

But today I suggest you use this trick consciously. Guess what – Number One Day One is here, and it’s January 1st, 2008. Isn’t it a good reason to start something new and exciting? You’ll have to wait a whole year until next January 1st if you miss this opportunity. I’m not necessary talking about becoming an early riser, I’m sure there are many other great habits that keep avoiding you (or rather you avoiding them?). Or maybe there are some bad habits you want to quit? Start new life on Day One!

If you happen to read this post after January 1st and “miss the deadline”, don’t be upset. There are many other "special" days you can find in a calendar. Be creative!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my dear readers!

I keep a "Next Great Day to Start" widget in my blog's sidebar that suggests the next special day to start a new goal -- the first of each month; Sundays; holidays; etc.

January 1 is as good a time as any. It is certainly better than that elusive "tomorrow".

In addition to day one, I think the other is you have to make it a habit. If I remember correctly you need to do some (exercise, eat healthy, etc.) I believe either 14 days to make it a habit. It may be longer like 30 days, but the point is to keep doing it until it is a habit.

Your so right about picking a special day to start something as a procrastination trick. Every time I'm offered some great treats like cake or pie I always say to myself I'll start being healthy next week..haha. I've already messed up day 1 by eating bad food. I need to get some discipline!

I would have to agree with you that a "special day" is a way to procrastinate. If you want to make a change just make the change. Do not wait for a specific day or wait to make a new year's resolution.

People buy nature are lazy. It's so much easier to come up with excuses than to take action. Taking action is work and scary. With fear comes lack of action. Stop thinking and start doing.

This is a good point.

At the moment, my room is really dirty to the point that I can't work at all, but If I applied this technique and decided in the moment to clean up, I'd be in a sparkling room.

I don't think you necessarily need a special day to start something new. You can and should start something new today, not tomorrow, or next week. Although, if that day happens to fall on a nice date such as January 1st, great!

I think having any extra momentum, like associating the new habit with a memorable day couldn't hurt. It won't certainly help, but.....couldn't hurt.

If only I had a cent for every time I said that I was going to change things in my life starting from Monday, starting from the new year and so on...
I think it's because dates like that signify a fresh start. At least that's how I see things!

Have to agree. I hear this so much on the first of the month. Then they give up within a few days. Im going to start eating healthy now and not wait till the first of next month. Good advice

Perhaps instead of something you can do for yourself on "day one" think of things you can do for others. Such as volunteering at a retirement home to keep seniors' minds sharp. A lot of the time their own families don't visit them. Seniors need attention just as much as everyone else.

Alot of my colleagues at work said their news years resolution was to stop smoking. The new year is gone and they have not stopped. One even said he will do it next year!

You should always start something right away. If you wait and say that you will start in next week or the first of the month or whatever then you are just procrastinating.

Starting fresh is a wonderful feeling. You are completely right that starting at one is much more appealing. Perhaps it is because it is easier to track and measure our progress if we have an easy reference date.

I would definately agree with starting out as the hardest part. It's already February and the amount of goals I have put off is scary. But the nice thing is, once you get started and stick with them, you can eventually get them to the habit stage, and then they are much easier
Cars Info says:
2/7/2008 9:52:09 PM
yes, this is the most correct point, we should start something new on fresh day.....for that there is no need to start your resolution on 1st Jan only you can start it from any day......so plan something new from today itself.

Great advice! Too many times I wanted to start doing something good but didn't really get around to actually do it. If I say I'll do it in a week, subconsciously I will not have any moral difficulties to postpone it another day, because hey, it's only a day. And this is the beginning of the end
Tjen Penge På Nettet says:

Hmmm... i have to say i disagree... At least partly, because i do think you have a point.

But you can also use that date in the future as a goal day, and then mentally build yourself up with good expectations to what's gonna happen on that particular day...

That way you start momentum even before the day in mention.

One symbolizes a new start or a new thing. I guess you have more chances to stick to anything that you started on first and you can always keep a count.

I agree with the fact that people set their days on "Mondays" or other "day ones" to procrastinate. They think it gives them time to prepare. I see it a lot when I watch the show Intervention and they say, "You gotta go now. Not tomorrow, not in a couple of hours but now." And the addict always replies with, "But I haven't even gotten high today." Everyone needs their last "high." Usually, with anything, if you don't do something right away, you will never get it done.

Sandra Prangenberg says:

According to me it is not compulsory to start from a special day. If you think what you want to do is right then start it from now, no need to start from tomorrow or from some special day.

I guess putting of things to do is always a bad thing huh?
I am a evening person and it never seems to be good for my system to wake up early.
Let's all exange cell phone numbers and call each other
That reminds me, i used a free online wakeup service once, they called your cellphone on a certain hour, and you heared german beer songs .
It was extra funny because my father is German and i spammed his phone for 1 week. Have a good sleep guys! Time to go to bed for me.
